The Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Kwara State axis, Comrade Yusuf Abdulgafar, has been accused of harassing and intimidating students with military men at the first senate sitting he chaired on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
According to some student leaders who attended the sitting, Abdulgafar left the venue without consulting the senators who were present to represent the interests of their students. He also allegedly ignored the observations raised by the Student Union President of Kwara State University, who questioned why the chairman was asking about the status of each institution after a year in office.
Another observation was why the chairman brought armed forces to the pre-convention, which was supposed to be a peaceful and democratic gathering of student representatives from various institutions in Kwara State.
The student leaders claimed that the chairman stormed out of the sitting after imposing his will on the senators and students leaders, leaving behind the mace, which is a symbol of authority and legitimacy of the senate.
In his absence, the senators representing Kwara State Polytechnic and Kwara State University nominated the vice chairperson, Comrade Ameerah Mohammed, as the acting chairman. She then appointed Samuel Shina of Kwara State Polytechnic as the chairman of the convention planning committee (CPC), with Sheu Ibrahim as the CPC PRO and Ishola Ayomide of Offa Polytechnic as the CPC secretary.
The student leaders expressed their dissatisfaction with the conduct of the chairman, saying that he was not after the welfare of Kwara State students. They called for his resignation or impeachment, and demanded an apology from him for his actions.
They also appealed to the relevant authorities to intervene and ensure that the rights and interests of the students are protected and respected.
