MINDSET OF A CHAMPION

By Promise Odejide

Many people have dreams and goals, but not everyone is willing to work hard and sacrifice for them. Some people give up easily when they face challenges and difficulties, while others persevere and overcome them. What makes the difference between those who quit and those who succeed? One of the possible answers is the mindset of a champion.

A champion is someone who has a strong desire, a clear vision, and a relentless will to achieve excellence in their field. A champion is someone who does not let fear, doubt, or pain stop them from pursuing their passion. A champion is someone who learns from their failures and improves from their mistakes. A champion is someone who inspires others with their courage, confidence, and charisma.

One of the greatest examples of a champion in history is Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer and activist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential sports figures of the 20th century¹. He was not only a phenomenal athlete, but also a social and cultural icon who stood up for his beliefs and principles. He was known for his witty and provocative quotes, such as "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" and "Impossible is nothing" . One of his most famous quotes is: "I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion."

What does this quote mean? How did it reflect Ali's life and career? And how can we apply it to our own lives and goals? One of the key aspects of Muhammad Ali's success as a boxer was his rigorous and disciplined training routine. Ali knew that in order to be the best, he had to train harder than anyone else. He would wake up early in the morning and run six miles in heavy boots, followed by stretching and calisthenics. He would then go to the gym and practice his skills on the shadowbox, the heavy bag, the speed bag, and the jump rope. He would also spar with different opponents to test his endurance and technique. Ali's training regimen was designed to improve his speed, power, stamina, and agility in the ring.

Ali once said, "I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion." This quote reveals Ali's mindset and attitude towards his training. He did not enjoy the pain and hardship of his workouts, but he endured them because he had a bigger goal in mind. He wanted to be a champion, not only in boxing, but also in life. He wanted to prove himself to the world, to his opponents, and to himself. He wanted to make history and leave a legacy. He wanted to suffer now, so that he could enjoy the fruits of his labor later. He wanted to be the greatest of all time.

Corps Member Tackles Unemployment in Gombe with Fish Farming Training

A bold new project aimed at transforming the lives of 100 young people in Gombe is underway, as Ishaq Abdullahi Shehu, a dedicated National Youth Service Corps member from Kano State, turns his agricultural expertise into a community development program. The initiative focuses on modern fish farming techniques designed to combat youth unemployment and boost local food production. Ishaq, a graduate of agriculture from Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil with specializations in forestry, fisheries, and wildlife, is committed to changing the perception of farming. “Agriculture must be seen as a viable business, not just a way of life,” he explains. His program centers on the innovative Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), a method that recycles water through mechanical and biological filtration to allow for high-density, sustainable fish farming while minimizing the use of land and water. Gombe, like many parts of Nigeria, is grappling with the dual challenges o...
