Tips for Staying Healthy and Healing from Trauma

By Promise Odejide

The term that describes the emotional and psychological impact of a deeply upsetting or disturbing event or experience is called Trauma . It can affect anyone, regardless of their age, gender, culture, or background. Trauma can have long-term consequences for your mental and physical health, such as causing anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and more.

However, you can recover from trauma and live a happy and fulfilling life. One of the key factors that can help you heal from trauma is your health. Being healthy means taking care of your body, mind, and spirit. It means making choices that support your well-being and happiness.

Here are some helpful tips on how to stay healthy and heal from trauma. These tips are not meant to replace professional help, but rather to supplement it and enhance your recovery process.

📌 Tip 1: Get Help

The first and most important step to heal from trauma is to get help from a qualified professional. A therapist, counselor, or psychologist can help you understand your trauma, process your feelings, and cope with your symptoms. They can also provide you with tools and strategies to manage your stress and improve your quality of life.

Getting help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength and courage. You are not alone in your struggle, and there are people who can support you and guide you along the way. You can find help through your local health care provider, online resources, or support groups.

📌 Tip 2: Eat Healthy

Eating healthy is essential for your physical and mental health. Food is not only a source of energy, but also a source of nutrients, antioxidants, and hormones that affect your mood, cognition, and immunity. Eating healthy means choosing foods that are nutritious, balanced, and varied. It also means avoiding foods that are processed, high in sugar, fat, or salt, or that trigger allergies or sensitivities.

Some of the foods that can help you stay healthy and heal from trauma include:

↘️ Fruits and vegetables: They are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals that can boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, and protect your cells from damage. Aim for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and choose a variety of colors and types.
- Whole grains: They are a good source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, and B vitamins that can provide you with steady energy, regulate your blood sugar, and support your nervous system. Choose whole grains such as oats, brown rice, quinoa, or buckwheat over refined grains such as white bread, pasta, or rice.
↘️ Lean protein: They are a good source of amino acids, iron, zinc, and selenium that can help you build and repair your muscles, tissues, and organs. They can also help you feel full and satisfied. Choose lean protein sources such as fish, poultry, eggs, beans, nuts, or seeds over red meat, processed meat, or fried foods.
↘️ Healthy fats: They are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants that can help you maintain your brain function, mood, and heart health. They can also help you reduce inflammation and lower your cholesterol. Choose healthy fats such as olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, or fatty fish over saturated fats such as butter, cheese, or cream.

📌 Tip 3: Exercise Often

Exercise is one of the best ways to stay healthy and heal from trauma. Exercise can help you improve your physical fitness, strength, and endurance. It can also help you improve your mental health, mood, and self-esteem. Exercise can release endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, which are natural chemicals that can make you feel good, reduce pain, and relieve stress. Exercise can also help you distract yourself from negative thoughts, cope with emotions, and express yourself.

Exercise does not have to be strenuous or boring. You can choose any activity that you enjoy and that suits your level of fitness and ability. Some examples of exercise include:

↘️Walking, jogging, or running: They are simple and effective ways to improve your cardiovascular health, burn calories, and strengthen your bones and muscles. You can walk, jog, or run anywhere, anytime, and at your own pace. You can also listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks while you do it, or invite a friend or a pet to join you.

↘️Yoga, pilates, or tai chi: They are gentle and relaxing ways to improve your flexibility, balance, and posture. They can also help you calm your mind, breathe deeply, and meditate. You can practice yoga, pilates, or tai chi at home, in a studio, or in a park. You can also follow online videos, apps, or books to guide you.

↘️Dancing, swimming, or cycling: They are fun and engaging ways to improve your coordination, agility, and endurance. They can also help you express your creativity, emotions, and personality. You can dance, swim, or cycle alone, with a partner, or in a group. You can also join a class, a club, or a team to meet new people and socialize.

📌 Tip 4: Sleep Well

Sleep is vital for your health and well-being. Sleep can help you restore your energy, repair your body, and consolidate your memory. Sleep can also help you regulate your emotions, cope with stress, and improve your mood. Sleep deprivation can impair your physical and mental performance, increase your risk of illness and injury, and worsen your symptoms of trauma.

Sleeping well means getting enough quality and quantity of sleep. The amount of sleep you need may vary depending on your age, lifestyle, and health condition, but generally, adults need about seven to nine hours of sleep per night.

Trauma can be a challenging and painful experience, but it does not have to define you or limit you. You can heal from trauma and live a healthy and happy life. One of the ways to do that is to take care of your health, by seeking help, eating well, exercising often, and sleeping well. These tips can help you improve your physical and mental well-being, and enhance your recovery process.

Remember, you are not alone, and you are not your problem. You are a strong and resilient person, who has survived and overcome many difficulties. You have the power and the potential to achieve your goals and dreams. Don't look like your problem, look like your solution. 💪

Gombe, like many parts of Nigeria, is grappling with the dual challenges o...
