THE POWER OF WORDS: HOW COMMUNICATION CAN MAKE OR BREAK A LEADER

By Promise Odejide

Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful leadership. As George Bernard Shaw, the renowned playwright and Nobel laureate, once said, "The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place." This statement perfectly encapsulates the significance of communication in leadership. Leaders must not only send messages but also ensure that they are received and well-understood by their followers.

Poor communication can cause significant problems within an organization, leading to misunderstandings, frustration, and decreased productivity. Despite the best intentions, people may not always communicate effectively due to a lack of effective communication skills. Thus, leaders must be equipped with the skills to communicate effectively and create a positive work environment. They must also work towards achieving shared goals with their team.

Steve Jobs, the legendary entrepreneur and former CEO of Apple, was a master communicator who inspired his team to create innovative products. He conveyed his vision with powerful language and clarity, using descriptive adjectives, visual aids, and humour to engage his audience. By communicating his vision effectively, he created a strong brand identity and persuaded millions of people to buy his product.

Relatedly to Steve Jobs, Articulating a vision is one of the most crucial things that leaders must do to promote the progress of the organization. This involves being able to communicate goals, objectives, and strategies in a manner that is easily understandable by everyone involved. A leader must be able to communicate their vision in a way that motivates and inspires their team to work towards achieving it. When a leader can communicate their vision effectively, their team feels engaged, and they are more likely to work hard towards achieving it.

Apart from being able to articulate a vision, leaders must also be active listeners, which is another critical component of effective communication. Leaders must be willing to listen to feedback, concerns, and ideas from their team members. Active listening involves giving the other person your undivided attention, asking questions, and seeking to understand their point of view. When leaders listen actively, they demonstrate that they value their team's input and are open to new ideas and feedback.

Equally important, leaders must be mindful of their tone and body language when communicating. The tone of voice and body language can significantly impact how a message is received. A leader who communicates in a calm and confident tone inspires confidence in their team. In contrast, a leader who communicates in an angry or aggressive tone may create fear and anxiety. Body language, such as maintaining eye contact and open body posture, can also convey confidence and trustworthiness.

In addition, Consistency is another crucial component of effective communication. Leaders must be consistent in their messaging and actions. Inconsistencies in communication can create confusion and erode trust. Leaders must ensure that their words and actions align with their values and that they follow through on their commitments.

To conclude, communication is a critical element of leadership. Leaders must communicate their vision clearly, actively listen to feedback, be mindful of their tone and body language, and be consistent in their messaging and actions. Effective communication can inspire and motivate teams towards achieving a shared vision, leading to success for the organization. Therefore, leaders should invest in developing their communication skills and seek to improve their communication strategies. By doing so, they can enhance their leadership potential and make a positive difference in the world.

Corps Member Tackles Unemployment in Gombe with Fish Farming Training

A bold new project aimed at transforming the lives of 100 young people in Gombe is underway, as Ishaq Abdullahi Shehu, a dedicated National Youth Service Corps member from Kano State, turns his agricultural expertise into a community development program. The initiative focuses on modern fish farming techniques designed to combat youth unemployment and boost local food production. Ishaq, a graduate of agriculture from Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil with specializations in forestry, fisheries, and wildlife, is committed to changing the perception of farming. “Agriculture must be seen as a viable business, not just a way of life,” he explains. His program centers on the innovative Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), a method that recycles water through mechanical and biological filtration to allow for high-density, sustainable fish farming while minimizing the use of land and water. Gombe, like many parts of Nigeria, is grappling with the dual challenges o...
