WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

By Promise Odejide

"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."

This is one of the most famous quotes by Martin Luther King Jr., a visionary leader and advocate for equality who spearheaded the civil rights movement in America through nonviolent protests. His life and legacy are an inspiration for anyone who faces challenges and obstacles in pursuing their dreams and goals.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, into a family of Baptist ministers. He graduated from high school at the age of 15 and received his doctorate in theology in 1955. He became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

In 1955, he led the Montgomery bus boycott, a 382-day campaign of civil disobedience against racial segregation on public buses. He was arrested, his home was bombed, and he faced personal abuse, but he did not give up. He emerged as a national leader of the civil rights movement and a champion of nonviolence.

In the following years, he organized and participated in numerous protests, marches, sit-ins, and rallies for racial justice and voting rights. He delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington in 1963, where he called for an end to racism and a society where people are judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. He also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his efforts to combat racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.

He faced many difficulties and dangers along the way. He was arrested more than 20 times, assaulted at least four times, and received countless death threats. He was also criticized by some of his fellow activists for being too moderate or too radical, too optimistic or too pessimistic, too religious or too secular. He struggled with depression, anxiety, and self-doubt at times. He also had to balance his personal and family life with his public and political responsibilities.

 ADVERT:

But he never gave up. He never stopped fighting for his vision of a more just and peaceful world. He never stopped speaking out against injustice and oppression. He never stopped believing in the power of love and nonviolence to overcome hate and violence. He never stopped dreaming of a better future for all people.

He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, where he had gone to support the striking sanitation workers. He was only 39 years old. His death shocked and saddened the nation and the world. But his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of millions of people who continue to strive for his ideals.

Martin Luther King Jr. taught us to never give up, no matter how hard or hopeless the situation may seem. He taught us to keep moving forward, even if we have to crawl. He taught us to have faith in ourselves, in each other, and in a higher power. He taught us to have courage, to have compassion, and to have hope.

He taught us to NEVER GIVE UP ON OUR DREAMS.

Corps Member Tackles Unemployment in Gombe with Fish Farming Training

A bold new project aimed at transforming the lives of 100 young people in Gombe is underway, as Ishaq Abdullahi Shehu, a dedicated National Youth Service Corps member from Kano State, turns his agricultural expertise into a community development program. The initiative focuses on modern fish farming techniques designed to combat youth unemployment and boost local food production. Ishaq, a graduate of agriculture from Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil with specializations in forestry, fisheries, and wildlife, is committed to changing the perception of farming. “Agriculture must be seen as a viable business, not just a way of life,” he explains. His program centers on the innovative Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), a method that recycles water through mechanical and biological filtration to allow for high-density, sustainable fish farming while minimizing the use of land and water. Gombe, like many parts of Nigeria, is grappling with the dual challenges o...
