CHARITY GOES BEYOND THE CAMERA OR SCREEN

While watching TV last night, I noticed a particular NGO running a charitable foundation. Whenever they conduct their charitable activities, they bring along a camera to showcase their recipients on screen. I couldn't help but wonder why they do this.

In a book I read some time ago, Jim Carrey was quoted on a particular page, mentioning, "Imagine struggling with homelessness and someone shoves a camera in your face as they offer you a meal... imagine that feeling." Sadly, this scenario has become commonplace, where many charity givers seek recognition for their acts of generosity towards the less privileged.

This behavior is contrary to the teachings of both the Bible and the Quran. In Matthew 6:3-4 (NIV), it is stated, "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Likewise, the Quran, in Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:271, conveys, "If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you. And He will remove from you some of your misdeeds. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted."

While helping the poor is commendable, thrusting cameras into their faces diminishes the noble intent. These individuals might believe that you're genuinely aiding them and offer prayers for your blessings, unaware that you're prioritizing personal gain. As a friend wisely put it, "Everyone is selfish, we do things for our personal interest." Sadly, even acts of charity can sometimes be tainted by ego.

Hence, I implore on behalf of the needy: stop this behaviour. If you step forward to assist someone, do so with genuine kindness, compassion, and a selfless heart. Let your actions speak louder than your ego.

Remember "Do good, with intention not for attention 😓🙏"

Thank you.

Corps Member Tackles Unemployment in Gombe with Fish Farming Training

A bold new project aimed at transforming the lives of 100 young people in Gombe is underway, as Ishaq Abdullahi Shehu, a dedicated National Youth Service Corps member from Kano State, turns his agricultural expertise into a community development program. The initiative focuses on modern fish farming techniques designed to combat youth unemployment and boost local food production. Ishaq, a graduate of agriculture from Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil with specializations in forestry, fisheries, and wildlife, is committed to changing the perception of farming. “Agriculture must be seen as a viable business, not just a way of life,” he explains. His program centers on the innovative Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), a method that recycles water through mechanical and biological filtration to allow for high-density, sustainable fish farming while minimizing the use of land and water. Gombe, like many parts of Nigeria, is grappling with the dual challenges o...
