The game of Chess offers diverse lessons to all who engage in playing it. From decision-making to political insight and personal development, each move imparts a valuable lesson. I could vividly remember one day while I was teaching my alter ego, Woru, how to play chess. I made him understand that the king leads, supported by the queen, bishops, ready knights, and fortified by rooks.
As we continue the game, he curiously asked about the pawns, prompting me to explain, "These pieces symbolize individuals in society; at times, we become footmen used by selfish leaders against adversaries."
I likened these footmen to the youth, often positioned to set traps and protect kingly honor. However, only the sharpest among them ascend to royal soldiers. But, I added, before a soldier attains royal status, their journey is akin to iron passing through fire.
As we progress, I laid an emphasis on the king's relationship with his queen, highlighting that a king without a queen is feeble, much like a chessboard king powerless when checked.
"Also, In the realm of politics, adopting the role of a pawn can lead to entrapment and illusion. If such a scenario arises, I advised refraining from those who push you into such perilous paths." I told him.
Moving forward, I made him know that my approach to decision-making mirrors my knowledge of Chess's strategy. If a move will jeopardize my image, I seek alternatives, because a single step can lead a warrior to doom. This philosophy extends to personal development, where I believe mentorship as pivotal to my growth as a dedicated young man aspiring to progress in all endeavors, I believe that my mentors watch over me.
Finally, as I almost eliminated all of his soldiers on the board, I told him that just as this chessboard reveals intricate strategies, life itself is a game of moves and decisions, where each piece plays a role, and the path to victory requires thoughtful consideration and strategic planning.
