DIVERSITY DOESN'T BREAK OUR SOCIETY, IT ENRICHES IT

By: Promise Odejide

Diversity is a term that describes the variety of human differences, such as culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, and more. Diversity is often seen as a source of conflict and division in society, as people tend to favour their own groups and discriminate against others. However, diversity can also be a source of strength and opportunity, as it can enhance creativity, innovation, empathy, and social cohesion. I want us to focus on some of the benefits of diversity for society and how we can elevate more universal and respectful environment for all.

One of the main benefits of diversity is that it can boost creativity and brainchild. A diverse group of people can bring together a wide range of perspectives, ideas, and experiences, which can lead to more creative and brainchild solutions to problems or challenges. For example, research has shown that diverse teams tend to outperform homogeneous groups, as they can draw upon a broader range of skills, experiences, and perspectives. Diversity can also foster learning and personal growth, as interacting with people from different backgrounds can help individuals expand their knowledge and understanding of different cultures, values, and experiences. This can promote empathy and reduce prejudice and stereotypes.

Another benefit of diversity is that it can improve decision-making and performance. Diverse teams are more likely to consider multiple viewpoints and approaches, which can lead to better decision-making and improved outcomes. Diversity can also enhance adaptability and resilience in the face of change, as diverse groups can be more flexible and responsive to new challenges and opportunities. Diversity can also reflect and serve the needs of diverse populations, as organizations and institutions need to be able to understand and meet the needs of different groups. A diverse workforce or community is better equipped to do so, ensuring that products, services, and policies are more relevant and accessible to all.

A third benefit of diversity is that it can advance universally cohesion. Encouraging diversity and promoting an universal environment can help reduce discrimination and promote a sense of belonging for all members of society. Diversity can also contribute to social justice and equity, as promoting diversity is an essential part of working towards a more just and inclusive society, where all individuals have equal opportunities and are not held back by discrimination or prejudice. Diversity can also contribute to economic growth by increasing the talent pool, advancing inventions, and promoting better decision-making within organizations.

Conversely, diversity is not without its challenges. Diversity can also create conflicts and tensions, as people may have different values, beliefs, or preferences that clash with each other. Diversity can also create misunderstandings and communication barriers, as people may have different languages, accents, or expressions that are unfamiliar or confusing to others. Diversity can also create feelings of threat or anxiety, as people may feel that their identity or status is challenged or threatened by others who are different from them.

Therefore, diversity requires careful management and support. To reap the benefits of diversity and overcome its challenges, There's a need for us to create a culture of respect and appreciation for human differences. We need to educate ourselves and others about the value of diversity and the importance of inclusion. We need to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from different backgrounds and perspectives. We need to emphatically accept diversity as an opportunity for learning and growth rather than a source of fear or hostility.

Ergo, diversity is a reality of our modern society that can bring many benefits if we accept it with openness and respect. Diversity doesn't break our society; it enriches it by enhancing creativity, innovation, empathy, performance, universally, social justice, and economic growth. By cultivating a more diverse and united society, we can create a better world for ourselves and generations to come.

Corps Member Tackles Unemployment in Gombe with Fish Farming Training

A bold new project aimed at transforming the lives of 100 young people in Gombe is underway, as Ishaq Abdullahi Shehu, a dedicated National Youth Service Corps member from Kano State, turns his agricultural expertise into a community development program. The initiative focuses on modern fish farming techniques designed to combat youth unemployment and boost local food production. Ishaq, a graduate of agriculture from Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil with specializations in forestry, fisheries, and wildlife, is committed to changing the perception of farming. “Agriculture must be seen as a viable business, not just a way of life,” he explains. His program centers on the innovative Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), a method that recycles water through mechanical and biological filtration to allow for high-density, sustainable fish farming while minimizing the use of land and water. Gombe, like many parts of Nigeria, is grappling with the dual challenges o...
