Promise Olamilekan Odejide
Last night, during a conversation at a local assembly where young men gathered to discuss, argue, and jest with one another, a notion arose that engaged everyone, including me. We delved into the topic of the disappointing leaders we have in Nigeria, and someone pointed out that instead of just criticizing them, we should ask ourselves: "If you were the president of Nigeria for a year, what would you do?"
The question demanded honest and thoughtful responses. Sadly, many individuals seemed fixated on personal gain, expressing their intention to enrich their own pockets. This realization sparked a deeper reflection on the state of leadership in Nigeria.
One insightful man in the group highlighted a crucial truth: what we desire to do if we were in power is often exactly what our current leaders are doing. The lure of authority and opportunity to exploit it for personal gain seems to overshadow the responsibility to serve the interests of the people.
To bring a renewed hope and change, patriotic Nigerians must prioritize the interests of others above their own. By doing so, we can satisfy the needs of the common citizens and work towards a stronger, more united Nigeria.
As the president, a fundamental step towards this goal is to envision the profound impact that injurious practices have on every sector in our nation. You need to identify these issues and seek advice from your citizens. Actively engaging with your people will allow you to evaluate the diverse solutions they propose and put them into action. This approach will bring a sense of belonging among all citizens of Nigeria.
Moreover, we must remember that effective leadership goes beyond personal gains; it requires putting the collective interests of our nation and its people first. By accepting patriotism and open dialogue, we can nurture a better Nigeria together, transcending the deficiencies of the past and building a brighter future for all.
God bless Nigeria 🙏
