THE DANGERS OF REFUSING SKILL ACQUISITION AND CREATIVITY IN NIGERIA OF TODAY

PC: Sanni Abdullahi

By Promise Odejide

Last week, I was privileged to attend a two-day skill acquisition program organized by Sho Pen Online and sponsored by Hon. Maryam Yusuf Aladi. I realized how important it is for youths to brace up and acknowledge that the world is fast becoming globalized, and all the former jobs or skills will not be relevant as time goes on unless one equips oneself with technological skills.

Nigeria is a country that faces many challenges, such as poverty, unemployment, insecurity, corruption, and poor infrastructure. These challenges make it difficult for many Nigerians to achieve their full potential and live a decent life. However, some Nigerians have found a way to overcome these challenges by acquiring skills and using their creativity to empower themselves. These are the people who have learned how to do something that sets them apart from the rest, such as sewing, baking, carpentry, photography, graphic design, programming, or writing. They have also used their skills and creativity to create products and services that meet the needs and wants of their customers. They have become entrepreneurs who generate income and create jobs for themselves and others.

However, not all Nigerians are willing or able to acquire skills and use their creativity. Some Nigerians have refused to take advantage of the opportunities and resources available to them to learn new skills or improve their existing ones. They have also refused to use their creativity to solve problems or create value. They have chosen to remain dependent on others or rely on luck or connections to get by. They have become liabilities who contribute little or nothing to the society.

What are the dangers of refusing skill acquisition and creativity in Nigeria? There are many negative consequences for those who refuse to acquire skills and use their creativity in Nigeria. Some of these consequences are:

📌 Lack of employability: Without skills and creativity, it is hard to find a job or keep one in Nigeria. The labor market is very competitive and employers are looking for people who can add value to their organizations. Those who lack skills and creativity are often rejected or replaced by those who have them.

📌 Lack of income: Without skills and creativity, it is hard to earn a living or save money in Nigeria. The cost of living is high and the sources of income are limited. Those who lack skills and creativity are often poor or indebted.

📌 Lack of empowerment: Without skills and creativity, it is hard to be independent or confident in Nigeria. The society is harsh and the opportunities are scarce. Those who lack skills and creativity are often dependent or helpless.

📌 Lack of fulfillment: Without skills and creativity, it is hard to be happy or satisfied in Nigeria. The life is boring and the future is bleak. Those who lack skills and creativity are often unhappy or frustrated.

Therefore, refusing skill acquisition and creativity in Nigeria is a dangerous decision that can lead to poverty, unemployment, dependence, helplessness, unhappiness, and frustration. It can also prevent one from achieving one's dreams and goals.

How can one avoid these dangers? The solution is simple: acquire skills and use creativity. Skill acquisition and creativity are essential for success in Nigeria. They can help one to get a job or start a business, earn income or save money, be independent or confident, be happy or satisfied. They can also help one to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, create value, and make a difference.

There are many ways to acquire skills and use creativity in Nigeria. One can enroll in a reputable training center, attend online courses, read books, watch videos, join communities, seek mentors, practice regularly, experiment with ideas, learn from mistakes, etc. The important thing is to start today and never stop learning.

Skill acquisition and creativity are not optional in Nigeria. They are necessary for survival and success. Those who refuse them are doomed to fail. Those who embrace them are destined to succeed. The choice is yours.

Kwara State Polytechnic Mass Communication Graduate Emerges Best Fellow at the 2024 Young Communication Fellowship

As I read about Mosunmola Esther Ajibade’s recent achievement, lines from the Kwara State Polytechnic anthem echoed in my mind. The anthem is more than a song; it captures the heart of the institution’s mission: "Our Citadel Of Excellence, Great Minds Have Come Out Of Thee. Our Blessed POLYTECHNIC That Nurtures Talents, Fulfills Dreams, Destinies, Hopes And Aspirations. We Love You For You Are The Haven Of Bright Mind With Great Ideas. Your Products Are Found Everywhere, KWARAPOLY, Your Praises We Sing." These lines perfectly tells the story of Mosunmola. A graduate of the Mass Communication Department, she has excelled across various fields as a voiceover artist, OAP, red carpet host, and writer. Her latest feat as the best fellow at the 2024 Young Communication Fellowship, organized by PR Nigeria in partnership with Image Marketer Promotion (IMP), adds another feather to her cap. Mosunmola entered the fellowship as an alternative candidate but emerged as the bes...

Corps Member Tackles Unemployment in Gombe with Fish Farming Training

A bold new project aimed at transforming the lives of 100 young people in Gombe is underway, as Ishaq Abdullahi Shehu, a dedicated National Youth Service Corps member from Kano State, turns his agricultural expertise into a community development program. The initiative focuses on modern fish farming techniques designed to combat youth unemployment and boost local food production. Ishaq, a graduate of agriculture from Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil with specializations in forestry, fisheries, and wildlife, is committed to changing the perception of farming. “Agriculture must be seen as a viable business, not just a way of life,” he explains. His program centers on the innovative Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), a method that recycles water through mechanical and biological filtration to allow for high-density, sustainable fish farming while minimizing the use of land and water. Gombe, like many parts of Nigeria, is grappling with the dual challenges o...
